Furnace Issues To Be Aware Of This Fall
Heating season is upon us, which means that it’s time to make sure that you have what you need to stay comfy and warm over the next few months. I tend not to worry too much about heating issues, having fur and all. For those of you not adapted to arctic climates, though, you might want to make sure that your furnace is in good shape before relying on it on a daily basis.
Preventive maintenance is ideal for making sure that your furnace stays healthy throughout the winter season. Still, there is a chance that you’ll have to deal with some level of issue during the winter, though, which is why you need to keep an eye out for signs that your furnace is dealing with some kind of problem. The following are some common signs that a furnace is in need of repair:
- Short Cycling: Short cycling is when your furnace turns off before it can complete a full heating cycle. If your furnace is turning itself on and off every couple of minutes, that means it’s likely short cycling. Short cycling prevents your furnace from properly heating your home, but it also increases the amount of wear and tear the furnace experiences. A furnace that is allowed to short cycle over a long period of time will become more and more likely to develop other issues, and will likely need to replaced earlier than usual. Make sure that you call for repairs if you notice that your furnace is short cycling.
- Clogged Burner Assembly: Carbon particles tend to build up on the burner assembly jets over time, as a byproduct of normal natural gas combustion. As the carbon buildup gets worse, the jets will have a more difficult time igniting the gas stream. If your furnace seems to be having issues generating enough heat, it might be because the burner assembly is clogged. Having a professional clean out the burner assembly for you should resolve that issue. Make sure that you have it done soon, though, as a sufficient clog could prevent the furnace from starting up at all.
- Low Air Flow: If your furnace is not properly circulating enough air, there could be a number of different things wrong with it. If you do not have your air filter changed every few months or so (or do it yourself) it might become clogged. This will prevent a lot of the air in the ducts from making it into the furnace. A malfunctioning air handler can also make it quite difficult for the system to properly circulate air throughout the home during operation. If your furnace is having difficulty circulating enough air, call a professional technician to take a look at it for you.
